What is microneedling?
Microneedling, also called collagen induction therapy, uses a device with very fine needles to create tiny, controlled channels in the skin. This prompts the skin's natural repair response, which includes producing new collagen.
What can it help with?
Microneedling may help improve the appearance of uneven skin texture, enlarged pores, fine lines and some types of acne scarring. Results build gradually and differ from person to person.
Your consultation
Roxy Granville, an NMC-registered midwife and independent prescriber, will look at your skin, ask about your medical history and skincare routine, and explain whether microneedling suits you. Some skin conditions, active breakouts or recent treatments may mean it is not suitable at that time.
What happens during treatment
The skin is cleansed and a numbing cream is applied. The device is then passed over the treatment area.
A typical appointment, including numbing time, takes around 45 to 60 minutes.
Recovery and aftercare
Your skin is likely to look red and feel warm or tight, similar to mild sunburn, usually for one to three days. You will be given aftercare advice, including keeping the skin clean, avoiding make-up for a short period and using sun protection.
How many sessions?
Many people choose a course of treatments spaced several weeks apart. Roxy will recommend a plan based on your skin and goals.
Frequently asked questions
Does microneedling hurt?
Numbing cream is applied first, so most people feel only mild discomfort.
When will I see results?
Some people notice a fresher look within a week or two. Collagen-related changes build over the following weeks and with further sessions.
Is there downtime?
Redness is common for one to three days. Most people return to normal activities quickly, following their aftercare advice.
Who should not have microneedling?
It may not be suitable if you have certain skin conditions, active infection or breakouts in the area, or are taking some medications. This is checked at your consultation.
